White Otter

White Otter Castle

Crystal-clear White Otter Lake, part of Turtle River Provincial Park south of Ignace, has an area of approximately 80 square kilometers. One visit and you'll forever fall in love with it! Its best-known feature is White Otter Castle. Built in the early part of the century by Jimmy McQuat, his magnificent three-storey log home has attracted and mystified thousands of people over the decades. A major Conservation Project has just been completed. Your Host is an expert on the Castle, first visiting the Castle by canoe 30 years ago, conducting the annual rendezvous to White Otter Castle for several years, and currently serving as Chairman of the Friends of White Otter Castle. He can tell you about the Castle and Jimmy McQuat, and show you how the recently-completed conservation efforts were done.

White Otter Lake has seen two major logging eras and remnants of logging camps, dams and sluices can still be found along its shores. Just north of the Castle are the ruins of a logging camp-cum-Prisoner of War Camp with its own story. You can walk to it from the Castle. There are over 20 pictograph sites (your Guide & Host found & documented 16 of them!), and numerous native habitation archaeological sites. He has discovered 7,000-year-old stone tools on White Otter Lake! The area shows evidence of the transition zone between the Boreal and the St. Lawrence Forests, with a mix of tree species. Large red and white pine punctuate the horizon; one near the Castle has a ten foot girth! The lake has everything from sandy beaches to marshy shorelines, and majestic towering cliffs, along which are found many of the pictographs. Your Host has other secrets of the lake to share with you, too! It is recommended that you take more than one day to visit this majestic lake!
